A Spiritual Approach to Temporal Change

“God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress. Thus we do not fear, though earth be shaken and mountains quake to the depths of the sea.” –Psalm 46:2-3 Humans dislike change—we crave stability and continuity. We become dependent on habits and routines. And there is often a good reason for this. Yet, change is essential to survival and something that we are constantly called to do in the Gospel message. When it comes to our spiritual growth, we need to change; we need to become more Christ-like. As the old saying goes, “no pain, no gain.” Jesus tells us that our hearts must change to bring us closer to God’s love. Psalm 46 is directed toward the leader (verse 1). As leaders of our local Church, these verses remind us to put our hope in God and not to fear or become discouraged with change. “Are You Ready for Me to Enter?”

Fourth Sunday of Advent - December 21, 2025 Busy—this word keeps appearing all over. "I’m too busy." "I’ll get back to you when I have downtime." "My schedule is really full." Really? Too full for Christ? The late Dutch priest Fr. Henri J.M. Nouwen wrote about this “busy-ness” and worldly distraction saying that we often seek refuge in quiet time, in rest. But, he writes, “As soon as we are alone, ... inner chaos opens up in us. This chaos can be so disturbing and so confusing that we can hardly wait to get busy again .” We end up thinking about rest in terms of entering back into our “busy-ness” as soon as we can. It’s a false lull. Jesus wants us to take a full break—full stop. He is the reason for this season of Advent—patient waiting. Climbing the Mountain of Advent with Jesus

In 2006, an experienced mountaineer from Australia named Lincoln Hall was on his way back down from experiencing the summit of Mount Everest when he suddenly became very ill. Members of his climbing party used oxygen to try and revive him, but because of the weather conditions and timing, the party thought he was dead and left his body. When they returned to base camp, they called his family and told them he had died. It was a sad ending to a one-in-a-lifetime event for them all. But the next day, another party was hiking up to the summit when they suddenly saw movement from a body. Hall, hallucinating, exhausted, and frostbitten, was alive. The team used their supplies to stabilize him and got him down safely. They selflessly gave up summiting the world’s tallest mountain to save a single man’s life. Hall survived the ordeal and eventually shared his story with the world. In many ways, this story reflects our own spiritual journey to the Mountain of God. In the first reading...
